Moss wins local battle

The East Penn Conference Girls Tennis Tournament's number three singles final was a rematch of city rivals, Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic, on Saturday at Parkland High School where Liberty's Emily Moss won the gold medal, defeating Becahi's Molly Ehrig, who won silver, 10-2.

Moss said, "I'm so happy. I was really hoping this would happen, but I didn't think it would. I was very nervous the whole time for every match. My coach [Leo Schnalzer] was talking me through."

Moss also won her match against Ehrig last week in the Hurricanes' 5-2 victory over the Hawks.

"I remembered how we played last time, and I was hoping to win again, using the same strategy," said Moss.

Overall, Ehrig felt that she played better in the tournament final than in their previous meeting.

"I feel good. Obviously, some things could have gone better, but overall, I was really happy with the day and feeling really good. Today, my serve was pretty good. I didn't have that many double faults, and I was getting the ball back,"Ehrig said.

Ehrig's first match of the tournament ended in an 8-2 victory over Whitehall, followed by a 7-4 tiebreaker over Parkland.

"It was really nervewracking, but I practiced the tiebreaker a lot. My coach [George Harmanos] told me to hit to the weaker side or to hit deeper," said Ehrig.

The Becahi freshman also defeated East Stroudsburg South, 10-8, in the semifinal.

"I was down in the beginning, then I tied. Then she would get a game to tie, and I would get a game to tie. You just tell yourself you can do it and never give up," Ehrig said.

Moss's first match ended in an 8-2 victory over Allen, followed by an 8-2 victory over Allentown Central Catholic.

"I never played the girl from Central before, but we went to deuce a lot. The girl from Allen got better since I played her this season," Moss said.

Moss also defeated Freedom's Kaitlin Schwent, 10-5, in the semifinal despite a sprain in her left thigh.

"I just moved wrong in the Freedom match. I wasn't really focusing on it during the match. Before I hurt my leg, I was moving around the court a lot more. I feel like we, at number three, don't hit as fast as one or two, but she was," said Moss.

The Hurricane senior felt that her serve was better than usual during the tournament.

"The tournament was a lot of fun. There's always the rivalry between Liberty and Freedom. That's why it was the hardest match. It's my last year, and I'm really glad I won," Moss said.
