Liberty knocks off Becahi
The Liberty Hurricanes added another victory to their top-of-the-East Penn Conference record with a 5-2 win over Bethlehem Catholic last week.
Perhaps the most compelling match of the day came at number three singles, where both Emily Moss of Liberty and Molly Ehrig of Becahi were undefeated, but at the end of the day, Moss won 6-3, 6-2.
"I was really nervous to play her, but my coach [Leo Schnalzer] was helping me the whole time," Moss said. "I tried things I never do, like short balls, and I tried moving her around back and forth, and that worked."
Moss and Ehrig went to deuce often.
"I couldn't get my serve in at all, but I got my second serve in every time," said Moss. "She got most of hers in. And her lobs, she kept lobbing it back, and usually I'm the one who does that. The second set was easier. Once I start playing, it just comes easier."
Moss was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.
"It felt really good. I really didn't think it would happen this year. I'm really hoping to medal in the tournament," she said.
At number one singles, Liberty's Samantha Peterson defeated Brooke Adams, 6-4, 6-1, and at number two singles, Liberty's Madelyn Conrad defeated Tess Shuler, 6-1, 6-2. Peterson and Conrad also defeated Adams and Shuler at number one doubles, 6-1, 6-1.
Liberty's final win came at number three doubles where Sarah Manley and Jackie Arthur defeated Allie Palmisano and Tori Evert, 7-5, 6-3.
"Our strokes were better today than we've played, and we never served as good as we did today," said Arthur.
Lobbing was another strength for Manley and Arthur against Palmisano and Evert.
"Our coach is always right about lobs," said Manley. "Sometimes we were late returning serves, and they beat us down the alley a couple times."
Winning for Becahi were Maureen Mazza and Sam Macaluso over Katie Kametz and Briana Canady, 6-3, 6-2 at number two doubles, and Bailee Deshler and Julie Glemser over Martina Gale and Audry Kester, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 at number four doubles.
