FHS, LHS boys pick up two victories
Freedom and Liberty's boys cross country teams scored two victories apiece last week when the Patriots defeated East Stroudsburg South, 16-47, and East Stroudsburg North, 15-50, and the Hurricanes defeated East Stroudsburg South, 18-40, and East Stroudsburg North, 15-50.
Freedom's Dan Quigley won the meet in 15:57, followed by Liberty's Alex Fitch, who had a time of 16:05.
"I thought Alex would have me on the kick, so I started pulling away at the two mile. Today I just really wanted to come out and beat him, and at the end I ran out of a lot of fuel," Quigley said.
The Patriots took the next three spots with Will Alpaugh placing third in 16:29, Jason Lopez placing fourth in 16:31, and Ben Ziegler coming in fifth in 16:57.
Alpaugh said, "I felt like I improved a lot. Jason Lopez and I really pushed each other at the end to get in the sixteens. I was going to try to stay with Ben and Dan, and I ended up passing them. I picked it up toward the second mile, and then Jason and I stayed together."
Liberty's Will Masemore was sixth in 17:13, and teammate, Jonah George, placed eighth in 17:35.
George said, "I tried to stay near Isaac Gross from Freedom, so I just pushed it up to him. Since they're our buddy team, I always like sticking with some of their guys. At the last half mile, I broke away, but [Freedom's Tom Salerno] was right behind me.
"I think I did a pretty good race. The start was a little sketchy because there were a lot of people up front, so I had to make up some ground there."
Salerno placed ninth in 17:38, and Bethlehem Catholic's Andrew Shaffer came in tenth in 17:42.
"I started way too fast. Last year, I didn't finish, so it just felt good to finish. I thought the meet would be slower than it was," said Shaffer.
The Hawks defeated East Stroudsburg North 20-36, and East Stroudsburg South defeated Becahi, 19-44.
