EHS boys soccer remains undefeated

The Emmaus boys soccer team continues to roll, upping its overall record to 10-0-1 on the season with a pair of wins over Pleasant Valley and East Stroudsburg South over the past week.

The two wins also give the Hornets a streak of five straight shutouts and increases their scoring advantage over opponents to 35-4 on the season.

The Hornets have a comfortable lead over the rest of their division, with Nazareth sitting at 6-1 and Parkland at 6-3 on the year. Beyond that, Whitehall (3-3-1) is the only other team in the division at the .500 mark on the season, with both Central Catholic (4-5) and Northampton (3-5) trailing.

"We've played very well, but we can't let that go to our heads," said coach John Cari. "Just as quickly as you can win a few games, you can lose a few and things can change in the standings, so we can't take any team for granted and just need to keep doing what we need to do to win."

Junior John Fritz continues to lead the scoring barrage with 18 goals on the season and he continues to get them in bunches.

Against East Stroudsburg South, Fritz collected his third hat trick of the season in a 10-0 Emmaus win. Defensively, the Hornets have been extremely stingy and have allowed just eight shots on goal in their last three wins. Overall, the Emmaus defense has allowed just 44 shots on goal, with Parkland being the only team to collect double-digits in shots against the Hornets.

Senior Ethan Lang is seeing the majority of time in goal and has collected six shutouts, with sophomore Dylan Sosnow also getting some experience and he's delivered one shutout in his four starts.

"Our defense has been good," said Cari. "We have some guys who work very hard at playing defense and then we've gotten good play from our goalkeepers this season and that's always a recipe for success. Obviously, the less pressure that we allow other teams to put on us, the better off we are and we've done well at that this season."

There are seven games remaining on the schedule and they're all against Skyline Division foes, including two with Whitehall and one each with Nazareth and Parkland. While an unbeaten season would be nice, Cari and his players are keeping things in perspective and not getting ahead of themselves.

"There are good teams out there and you know that Nazareth wants to get us back and Parkland wants to get us back and we haven't seen Whitehall, but they certainly will put a target on our backs," said Cari of the remaining schedule. "It all comes down to how we play and if we do what we have to do to win, we can get there [an unbeaten season].

"If we lose a game along the way, it's not the end of the world, but we have to just stay focused and not allow ourselves to get into any bad habits. If we do that, we'll be okay."
