Conrad takes silver

Liberty High School's number two singles player, Madelyn Conrad, won the silver medal in the East Penn Conference Girls Tennis Tournament on Saturday at Parkland High School.

"I'm extremely happy. I did not expect to do this well, but I'm just really happy. My serves were on, my ground strokes were on, especially my backhand, and I had some nice volleys too," Conrad said.

Conrad, who made it to the final, faced East Stroudsburg South's Kaitlyn Poje, who ultimately won, 10-4.

"Going into it, I knew Kaitlyn was really good. I just tried to stay in the point. She had some nice serves, but I was able to return them. I'm just really excited. I never did this well," said Conrad.

Conrad's road to the silver medal started with a victory over Northampton, 8-1, followed by another 8-1 victory over Bethlehem Catholic's Tess Shuler.

In the semifinal, Conrad defeated Nazareth, 10-4.

"Amber is really consistent. She knows how to move people around the court. She has a nice serve," Conrad said.

Conrad's coaches, Leo Schnalzer, Neil Curtis, and Matt Krause prepared the Liberty junior for her best season so far.

"With the combination of all of them, they were really helpful, and playing with [teammate] Sam [Peterson], she really helps too. I only won one match last year [in this tournament]. I took my lessons and learned how high school players play, to stay in the point," said Conrad.
