Schutter nets two in muddy win over EHS
The downside of not having a turf field to play home games is that when there is bad weather, the conditions on the field make it tougher to play.
That is what happened last Saturday afternoon at Parkland High School when rivals Emmaus and Parkland met.
It was a game that would have been a perfect fit for the turf of Emmaus High School's Memorial field, but it was played up the road at Parkland's grass field.
The Trojans (7-0) remained unbeaten thanks to two goals from sophomore forward Brooke Schutter, and solid defensive play, holding the Green Hornets (3-2-1) scoreless for a 2-0 defeat on a rainy, muddy field.
"Some of our passes were really sloppy because the grass was wet," said Schutter. "I think we did a good job though of cleaning things up and managing it. It was tough out there."
Parkland used its home field advantage and played like it wasn't tough. The Trojans dominated in shots on goal and had their fair share of scoring efforts. Schutter had a lob go over Mackenzie McCann (6 saves) on the first shot of the game for a quick 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
Late in the first half, with a little over three minutes until halftime, Rachel Medlar found Schutter streaking through the defense on a through ball. Schutter took one dribble away from the defender to find some space, and hit a low effort that found side netting.
Once the Trojans found that two goal cushion, they were able to sit back and defend any attack the Green Hornets brought their way in the second half. The stat line showed that, with both teams only recording one shot on net.
It was a big win for Parkland, one of the first games the Trojans have been tested this season, and one that will go a long way towards reaching the playoffs in the new East Penn Conference.
"We're always really excited to play Emmaus," said Schutter. "This was my first [varsity] game against them, so it was nice to beat them. We had great support from our fans."
