Panthers are seeking first win of season

Through their first three games, the Parkland football team has overmatched and overpowered its opposition.

The Trojans have outscored their three opponents - Dieruff, Northampton and Central Catholic - by a 133-14 margin. The starting defense has not given up a single point yet, as they stand at 3-0.

But after practice on Tuesday afternoon, head coach Jim Morgans and his staff made it a point to relay the message of keeping the pedal to the medal, and to not play down to their opponents.

Pocono Mountain West comes in 0-3, and unlike Parkland, has given up a lot of points. The Panthers have been outscored 121-14 in losses to Whitehall, Stroudsburg, and Bethlehem Catholic.

The Trojans are coming off their latest victory, a 35-7 win at Central Catholic last Saturday night.

"We accomplished what we needed to do," said Morgans. "You have a plan in place and you hope that you can fulfill your duties, and we were able to do that."

With a new conference alignment in 2014, Parkland will face some teams they may not have seen in years' time. Pocono Mountain West is one of those teams, and besides watching a few highlights, Morgans does not know much about the Panthers.

"They've got some good athletes on both sides of the ball," said Morgans. "They do some things well, but have been scored on by Whitehall and Bethlehem Catholic. Our main focus is on each game each week, not to look ahead. We have long term goals and short term goals, and you need the short term goals first before you can get to the long term ones."

With a meeting at Whitehall the following weekend looming, the Trojans will look to get some good play out on Friday night and prepare themselves for the showdown the following week.
