On your mark, get set, donate Color Run scheduled by the BASD miniTHON committee

As BASD miniTHON prepares for their second annual "Color For the Kids 5k Run/ Walk," the community waits in anticipation to see what the student-run organization has planned for the event.

BASD miniTHON is a relatively young club among the student body of Freedom HS and general public of the area. It is in its third year; however, its new-born stature does not mean that the institution lacks the skills or professionalism to put together a spectacular community-wide event.

"We plan ahead for any problems, and a lot of it seems to fall into place as we approach the event," said Nick Youwakim, senior and FHS miniTHON events captain. "Since everyone works together to plan the events, it makes it a lot more fun and easier to do."

As with any event, the second year always seems to run smoother, allowing more space for improvement in the project. The BASD miniTHON committees have dedicated more than two months into piecing together "Color for the Kids" and hope that it shows.

"It's great to bring together the whole community with events like this for a good cause. We are really hoping that everyone comes out this year for more colors and a great time. But more importantly to support a tremendous cause for the kids," Youwakim said.

All the proceeds from BASD miniTHON and the events the organization hosts are donated to the Four Diamonds Fund, a foundation based out of Penn State University main campus. The Four Diamonds Fund is a charitable organization that works to ultimately "conquer childhood cancer."

"I think it will be one of our biggest fundraisers out of the entire year," said Alyssa Villani, FHS senior and president of Freedom's miniTHON organization. "It also serves to truly bring Freedom and Liberty together. We've put a lot of effort into creating a fantastic day, and no one is going to want to miss it."

The event is scheduled for Sept. 27 at Freedom. Runners will begin their race to the finish at 8 a.m. Along the way, they will experience splashes of color thrown in their direction every mile or so.

Registration is available on both the BASD and Freedom websites. Although the event is being held at Freedom, BASD miniTHON is a collaborative effort from both the Freedom and Liberty miniTHON committees.

"It is our second year, so we are getting the swing of things now," said Hayley Maurer, FHS senior and Freedom miniTHON fundraising captain. "Therefore, it will be bigger and better than last year. It is for a great cause and I urge everyone to run for the kids that can't and make a difference."
