New name

Tennis courts will be dedicated in honor of a longtime Northampton Area School District educator and tennis coach.

The courts will be dedicated at 3 p.m. Sept. 22 in honor of Eileen Carbone, a Northampton Area Middle School English teacher in the NASD for 35 years from 1963-1998 and head girls tennis coach for 40 years from 1974-2013.

"It is wonderful to see someone who is so dedicated to our schools and our students," school board member Jean Rundle said of Carbone.

The NASD board of education voted 8-0 to approve the proclamation naming the courts in honor of Carbone, who attended the Sept. 8 meeting.

A plaque will commemorate The Eileen Carbone Tennis Courts, adjacent to Wolf Field along Laubach Avenue and across the street from Northampton Area High School.

As girls tennis coach, Carbone's teams' record was 305 wins and 266 losses in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

She coached a girls tennis team to a District 11 championship and qualification for PIAA playoffs. She was named Coach of the Year in 2002.

After the meeting, Carbone told a reporter for Northampton Press that a double knee replacement necessitated her retirement.

"I fell getting out of a car. I didn't have a leg to stand on," she joked.

When she shook hands with school board members after the proclamation vote, Carbone quipped, "These are all former students."

It is estimated that in her 35 years of teaching, Carbone taught 5,250 students.
