New lighting installed at park

The bond between the Northampton Athletic Association and the Borough of Northampton is demonstrated in many ways. The strong association means cooperation at the athletic complex off Horwith Drive, where NAA youth football teams play and at the recreation center utilized by NAA basketball programs and Canal Park.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., borough council's building, land and recreation chairman, in a report at a Sept. 4 council meeting, related the NAA has just installed additional lighting at the borough's Canal Park baseball and football complex.

"There certainly seems to be a tremendous amount of youngsters that are involved in sports," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

At the recreation center on Lerchenmiller Drive, which has several basketball courts, the annual recoating of the gym floor has been completed.

"The floor is in excellent condition, considering all of the use it gets," Lopsonzski said.

Borough Solicitor William McCarthy sponsored a free seminar Sept. 12 for local police departments.

The seminar offered information on liability in using excessive force. It was held at the borough fire station's training room for more than 14 police officers and mayors who registered to attend.

The seminar is timely, taking into account recent national instances involving police and citizens.

The Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual street fair Saturday at the uptown area on Main Street.

The popular Saturday event which draws large crowds includes food, entertainment and crafts. Zarayko said a big turnout is expected again, to make the event a success.
