Field hockey team knocks off the K-Kids
When Whitehall and Northampton meet in field hockey, it's traditionally been a close game that has often needed an overtime session to decide a winner.
The Konkrete Kids came into the game at 5-1, losing only to Emmaus, while Whitehall stood at 4-1-1, and their most recent win coming against Nazareth.
With both teams north of .500, the game seemed destined to be another epic tussle beaten these cross-river foes.
However, it didn't go quite as scripted as the Zephs got two unanswered goals in the second half to win 4-1.
The win was another step toward a postseason berth for the Zephs who are currently sitting on a 6-1-1 record.
Head coach Emily Repsher said that they executed well throughout the game.
"We just came out ready," said Repsher. "Our girls were focused on the game plan."
That game plan included working successful combinations. She said they did a good job working the ball up the sideline, beginning with Cara Bonshak who would forward a pass to Kourtney Cunningham to begin an offensive rush.
Kourtney Cunningham has been a goalkeeper's nightmare this season. The senior has tallied a goal in each of their eight games. She had a goal against the Kids, raising her season total to 12.
"She's doing really well," said Repsher.
Kourtney Cunningham is not alone in helping arrange sleepless nights for goalies, as Kassidy Cunningham has registered seven goals, while Kylee Cunningham has added six.
Along with Kourtney Cunningham's goal, the Zephs got tallies from Kassidy Cunningham who found the back of the cage twice, and Cara Bonshak. Assisting on the goals were Kourtney Cunningham, Bonshak and Kylee Cunningham.
Repsher said that their offense, spurred by the play of Bonshak, Kourtney Cunningham, Kylee Cunningham and Kassidy Cunningham, has been instrumental in their success this season.
She said that Kassidy Cunningham's forte is positioning herself at the goal post where she can put in rebounds.
"She does a good job getting those tap-in goals," she said.
Defensively the Zephs were solid throughout the game against the Kids, allowing just five shots. Goalkeeper Gabby Henninger responded with four saves.
Limiting their chances was a byproduct of playing sound, intelligent defense.
"We were very smart in our backfield," said Repsher.
Repsher also thought they played with composure, another key to notching their sixth win.
"We were able to stay pretty calm and that was another key to our success," she said.
That composure also played a part in their win against the Blue Eagles last week. Repsher said it was an emotional game for the Zephs since Nazareth was the team that led to their downturn last season. After losing to Moravian Academy, Repsher said the team didn't want a repeat of last season and begin a losing streak.
They didn't have to worry, winning 3-1 to abruptly halt any losing streak. In that win, Rachel Schannauer scored a goal assisted by Kourtney Cunningham. Also finding the back of the cage were Kourtney and Kassidy Cunningham, with both goals assisted by Taylor George.
For the game, the shots were about even, with Nazareth registering two more chances, while Whitehall won the penalty corner advantage 24-9.
"We really wanted to fight back in that game," said Repsher. "We were trying to fight a tendency on becoming complacent. That was a big win for us."
