Campaign for safe streets continues in North Catty
Dan Silverblatt is on a mission. He and several of his neighbors are knocking on North Catasauqua doors, informing residents about vehicle break-ins that occurred earlier this summer.
He has attended borough council meetings in July and August to try to work out with borough officials a way of getting the word out to residents when there is a safety or crime issue. Many of his neighbors, the Palomino Drive resident has said, were unaware that in one night this summer, as many as 19 vehicle break-ins were reported.
Since the last council meeting, Silverblatt and his team of neighborhood volunteers have been distributing copies of a Catasauqua Press article reporting on the situation throughout the neighborhood.
"We're working our way down toward the park," he told council members at the Sept. 9 council meeting.
Brian Mott, whose car was broken into, said he is concerned that residents have not been given an update on the investigation, and questioned borough Police Chief Kim Moyer about it.
"Do you have any leads from the cellphone found in my car?" he asked.
Moyer could only say, "We're still working on the investigation."
Apparently, police are looking into the possibility that a phone found in Mott's car may have been left behind by the perpetrator.
Mott indicated he should have access to more information.
"As a victim, do I not have any rights to be informed?" he asked. "No one from the township or the police department has gotten in touch with me. I think I deserve a bit more than 'It's under investigation.'"
Borough Mayor Bill Molchany Jr. said the investigation is now being handled by Pennsylvania State Police, as the borough does not have the investigative resources to handle all of the details.
"As things progress, somebody will contact you," he said.
In the meantime, the neighborhood team continues to spread the word: residents should lock their cars, keep porch and yard lights on, and pay attention to any unusual activity and report it to police immediately.
