LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LHS beats NHS

After a 48-21 victory over Nazareth last week, Liberty now walks into the reality of playing another top level team this week when they travel to Whitehall (3-0) Friday night.

The Hurricanes (2-1) saw Doug Erney have himself a record night last week against the Blue Eagles, going 16-for-23 for 339 yards and a school-record five touchdowns.

Liberty would love to have a similar effort from Erney this week against the Zephyrs, who enter the contest equipped with the best player in the East Penn Conference, as running back Saquon Barkley, is playing like a man amongst boys this season.

Barkley has rushed for 560 yards and eight touchdowns already this season through three games, as the Penn State recruit will be a handful for the Hurricanes this week.

"Barkley is the real deal," said Liberty head coach John Truby. "He can out run you and he can run over you. Whitehall uses him in many different spots on offense and we first got to identify where he is at. We are going to have to swarm and gang tackle this week if we have any hope in stopping him."

Whitehall's offense has been led by Barkley, as the Zephyrs have scored 42.6 points per contest this season.

In the one game that Whitehall struggled to win, a week two 42-41 overtime thriller over Central Catholic, the Zephyrs came back from a 28-0 deficit to come away with the win. Truby took some lessons from Central's approach in that contest, in which he hopes his staff and players can apply this week.

"Central did a real nice job of hitting Barkley before he gets going in the first half," Truby said. "Second half was a different story. It's tough to sell out to stop him, because he plays in different spots and they have a few other guys like [Jake] Buskirk and [Chad] Rex that can hurt you."

If Liberty wants any chance to win this week, Barkley will obviously be the focal point, but executing their own gameplan will be just as important, as Erney will be the best quarterback the Zephyrs have seen this season.

Liberty's offense has seen it's share of success over the past two weeks, scoring 95 combined points, but that was against Allen and Nazareth, two of the worst teams in the conference.

The Hurricanes put up 27 against Bethlehem Catholic in the opener, but they also allowed 56 points. Finding the right balance this week will tell the story of what the end result will be for the 'Canes.

"Defensively, Whitehall has some really good players at each spot on the field," Truby said. "I think their secondary, maybe, the best in the conference this year. As far as an advantage, I think if we execute the game plan and don't hurt ourselves with holding calls we can make some plays."
