Beverly W. Hensler
Beverly W. Hensler, 82, of Allentown, died peacefully in her home Sept. 9, 2014, after a long illness. She was the wife of Dr. Donald H. Hensler. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Born in Baltimore, Md., she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Grace (Pratt) Warner.
After attending public school in Baltimore, she entered Western Maryland College where she earned a bachelor's degree in music, majoring in piano and voice. Upon graduation, she returned to Baltimore and taught music in the Baltimore County school system.
She lived in Madison, Wis., where she conducted the choir of Grace Episcopal Church, continuing her vocal work, gave recitals and church music programs. She was employed as a music teacher by joint school district No. 6 in Evansville and Shorewood Hills School in Madison, Wis. In 1972 she moved to Chatham, N.J. There she joined the choir of the United Methodist Church Summit, N.J., singing as lead and many solo parts in a number of choral performances. She took voice lessons from Mahon Bishhop, New York City. She joined a choral group, "The Interludes," under the direction of Ms. Lee Parsons, performing solo selections from Parsons compositions in public concerts.
She moved to Allentown in 1970 and joined the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, directed by Gloria Snyder. As lead alto she performed numerous choral compositions in church services and performed publicly as well, giving several concerts of her work. In addition to her music, she served the church as a Deacon, and later, as an Elder until failing health forced her resignation. During this period, she offered instruction in piano and had a number of students. In the spring of each year, a performance was held in her home.
She earned a Master of Education degree from Kutztown University, specializing in elementary guidance counseling in 1978 and taught in the East Penn School District until her retirement in 1995.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Dr. Julie G. and her husband Stephen Rutledge, of San Antonio, Texas, Ann L. and her husband Darryl Wendling, of Macungie, Katherine W., of Milford, Conn.; seven grandchildren, Aurey, Alex, Alicia, Austin, Ethan, Lawson and Samantha; four great-grandchildren, Athan, Hunter, Livy, Halan.
Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were made by the Schisler Funeral Home, Northampton.
