Residents urged to remember school bus stopping law

Whitehall Township police remind residents and visitors they are required to obey the state School Bus Stopping Law.

Drivers must stop and not attempt to pass or overtake a stopped school bus with red signal lights flashing and the stop arm bar is extended.

Motorists must stop when approaching an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and the stop arm bar extended. This includes roadways divided with painted lines.

Drivers also must stop at an intersection whether it is or is not marked with a stop sign. All traffic must stop at least 10 feet away from the school bus.

Only when the bus is on the opposite side of the street with a clearly defined dividing section or physical barriers providing separate roadways do drivers not have to stop.
