UGI work impacting quality of streets

Northampton Borough officials are not happy with the condition of streets in the town.

Street conditions have worsened due to a company retained by UGI replacing gas lines. One of the streets scheduled to be upgraded has been postponed until 2015.

"UGI is absolutely destroying a lot of streets in the borough," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said at last Thursday's council meeting. "I know they are not trying to do this on purpose, but we are concerned about the safety of the residents. I am sure it will take us five years to get all of the streets back in good condition."

The borough has an aggressive street upgrade program in place which impacts all four wards.

"We were going to repave First Street," Zarayko said. "It now appears UGI will be doing some major line restoration in that area. Therefore, this will be put on hold until next year."

Zarayko noted the blacktop applied after the gas lines are laid is not sufficient.

In the past, the borough invested a substantial amount of money to repave virtually the entire length of Main Street. However, a day or so after the street was reopened UGI began excavating streets.

There was concern the project could possibly lead to the cancellation of the Jack Frost Parade in late October.
