Parkland routs Northampton

The Parkland football team came into this season with high expectations. With head coach Jim Morgans stressing the amount of athletes he has on this team, the Trojans just can't get too high on themselves.

After an opening week victory over Dieruff 49-7, they bettered themselves by matching their week one points total, and shutting out Northampton 49-0 last Friday night behind four touchdowns from junior quarterback Devante Cross and two from senior tailback Unique Divine.

"Our offensive line does a great job blocking for us to get all of these points," said Cross. "Everything starts there and that helps us do what we want to do."

The Trojan offense was able to do what it wanted to, whenever it wanted to.

On their opening drive, three players accounted on a scoring drive that was finished by Divine's first score from two yards out. Jarey Elder had a five-yard rush on the opening play, and then caught a 19-yard pass from Cross. Preston Saylor also had a carry of seven, and Divine had rushes of 21 and 7 before his touchdown run finished off the drive.

The Konkrete Kids put together a long drive following the Trojans score, but were unable to convert on fourth down from the 11.

In his second year running the offense, and under his second quarterbacks coach, Cross took over the game, adding three rushing scores of 48, 2, and 63 yards, and a 21-yard pass to senior Josh Dieter.

"It's just kind of come naturally, knowing my role on this team," said Cross. "The coaches put me in a situation where they know I will succeed. It's been going really well so far."

The defense did its part once again, never giving Northampton even a sniff at putting points on the board.

Backup quarterback Ethan Persa added a 10-yard touchdown run on the final drive of the game.

With a game against Central Catholic coming up on Saturday, the Trojans are yet to be challenged.

"We just try to get better each week," said Cross. "Even when we aren't playing the better teams in our league, we can still do things to get better for when we are up against those better teams. When we get in that competitive game we'll know what to do and be ready."
