Golfers looking for win
The Whitehall golf team is looking to gain momentum as they approach the midway point of their season.
With five matches played, the Zephs are still looking for that first win. However, head coach John Conrad knew that his young team would experience a few ups and downs as they began this season. Most of the roster is new to the game, but he knows that each day brings them one step closer to breaking into the win column.
"We're showing improvement," said Conrad.
Conrad has seen that development. He said for a team that's basically just started playing the game a little over six months ago, they've made impressive strides.
"Their growth is outstanding," he said.
The Zephs recently completed a match against Central at Allentown Municipal, losing 412-501.
Senior Patrick Glasgow shot a 78. Conrad said it was most likely a career-best for Glasgow, noting he didn't coach him as adursophomore or freshman.
Par at Allentown is 72 and the course covers 6,845 yards. Conrad said that Glasgow was paired with ACC's No. 1 player Andy Milisits who shot a 76 to lead all scorers. Conrad believed that Glasgow's familiarity with the course, coupled with the competitive fire unleashed by playing a good friend, propelled him.
"They played together all summer," said Conrad. "I'm sure the competition gets pretty fierce."
Conrad said that situation really helped Glasgow, indicating that the senior has made steady improvement.
Tom Baker followed, shooting a 95. Freshman Ben Antonchak was next, carding a 108, while Chase Hutterer had a 109 and Noah Zahradnik shot 111.
Conrad said that Antonchak, who was just introduced to the game, looks like he's been playing for a long time. He expects these players to break 100 soon.
"We're on the right track," he said.
With five days between matches, Conrad said they've been hitting Willow Brook Golf Course, working first on the putting greens, followed by the range, and finishing up with some chipping.
He said the facilities are fantastic at Willow Brook, and they've been getting in work to help them notch that first win in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.
