Discussions on minipark continue

Designs for a park may impact the Northampton Farmers Market, now in its second year on Main Street.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said the farmers market is attracting shoppers to the site, a borough lot located between a church and a coffee shop. The farmers market, offering fresh produce, frozen ethnic foods, baked goods and flowers, is open Tuesday afternoons into the evenings, from late spring into early fall.

Victor Rodite, borough planner, has been the major proponent of the farmers market and is also pushing for the site to become part of a minipark. Rodite has been successful with obtaining a $105,000 grant for establishment of the park.

The issue is how much of the proposed park will be developed. There have been differing points of view on council as to what should be included in the park. Zarayko recently commented it will be council that will decide how much of the area should be developed into a park and whether it will include amenities such as benches, signs, a gazebo, performing center and restrooms. According to statements made at council meetings, the bottom line is expenditures cannot exceed $105,000.

At this time, no new locations have been proposed for the farmers market.
