Boys soccer avenges last year's loss to Kids

The Parkland boys soccer team may just be getting the 2014 season started, but they were familiar with how last season's match against Northampton played out. The Konkrete Kids handed the Trojans a loss during their inaugural meeting last season that left a sour taste in their mouth.

This time around, the Trojans were never threatened against the Konkrete Kids on Wednesday, their first Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) divisional game of the season.

Peter Kwakye-Ackah (two goals) and Tyler Madeira (one goal, one assist) helped the Trojans to a 3-0 first-half lead. Two more scores in the final 40 minutes kept the Trojans (5-0 overall; 3-0 in EPC) perfect on the season with their 5-2 victory over the Konkrete Kids (2-3 overall; 1-3 in EPC) on Tuesday.

"Last year, they beat us here in the first game of the year that we played against them," head coach Patrick Birns said. "I know a lot of the kids coming back remembered that and wanted to have a good showing.

Madeira took a pass on a corner kick early in the first half, and fired a deep shot that bounced off Northampton's side post and into goal for a quick 1-0 lead.

A junior midfielder that also started last year, Madeira then set up Kwakye-Ackah five minutes later with a perfectly-placed cross into the middle of the field. Kwakye-Ackah headed it beyond the outstretched arms of the Northampton goalkeeper with roughly 18 minutes to play in the first half.

"The corner came in, and it was cleared off a head of a defender," Madeira said. "I had a one-time back in for a shot, and it went in."

Alex Turner's penalty kick made it 3-0 three minutes later.

The Trojan defense hadn't allowed a goal through the first four games. They may have allowed two on Tuesday, but Birns has generally been pleased with the way his unit has been playing to open the season.

"Today we made two mistakes that are unfortunate, and they put it into the back of the net," Birns said. "Hopefully we can fix that next game."

Northampton's Yamil Yunez scored just two minutes into the second half to bring the Konkrete Kids to within two goals early, but Parkland's crisp passing generated two more quick scores moments later.

Kwakye-Ackah was on the receiving end of another beautiful Trojan pass inside the 18, and his redirection shot into the goal gave Parkland a 4-1 advantage. A couple of minutes later, Ahmad Awadalla's added another for the Trojans.

"I thought we played quickly and simple," Birns said. "That is when, as a coach, you get excited because you create a lot more opportunities.

The Trojans host Central Catholic on Thursday at 4 p.m., as they look for win No. 6 on the season.
