Patriots get to .500

After Freedom High School's 5-2 victory over East Stroudsburg North last week, the Patriots were breaking even with a record of 4-4.

Freedom topped Stroudsburg, Easton, Dieruff, and East Stroudsburg North, and fell to Moravian Academy, East Stroudsburg South, Bethlehem Catholic, and Nazareth.

Number one singles player, Flannery Johnston, said, "Our matches have been going pretty well this year, which has been nice."

As of last week, Johnston had a personal record of 6-2.

"Beca was a little bit of a struggle," she said. "I'm just trying to play a lot more relaxed and play for the fun of it. Last year, I was going after certain shots, and now there aren't any I'm particularly going after."

Also at 6-2 as of last week is number two singles player, Elizabeth McCarthy, who was a doubles player last year.

"I've learned that I've had to get in better shape [to play singles] and play more consistently. Over the summer, I played a lot of singles and played in a lot of tournaments, so I feel prepared. I still get to play doubles [at number one doubles], and I like playing doubles with Flannery," said McCarthy.

One of McCarthy's most challenging matches was her victory over Stroudsburg's number two singles player.

"The girl was really consistent, and I'm bad at playing consistent players because I like to hit the ball hard, so I was making a lot of errors," McCarthy said.

In the Patriots' match against East Stroudsburg North, McCarthy defeated Kate McConnell, 6-1, 6-0, and Johnston defeated Kristen Lassell, 6-1, 6-0. Freedom's number three singles player, Kaitlyn Swint, defeated Annie Marchesani, 6-2, 6-2.

Also victorious for the Patriots were Alyssa Kapcsos and Jenna Souto over Angela Boasiako and Natalie Gonzalez, 8-5, and Becky Packo and Madison McTier over Emily Becker and Celina Berrios, 6-4, 7-6.

Liberty defeated Pocono Mountain West last week, 7-0, and Bethlehem Catholic lost to Pleasant Valley 5-2.
