Pates show off potential

The points came in droves and the smiles went from ear-to-ear, but Freedom's football team knows it's just another step in the right direction to winning back the Patriot family following last Friday night's 67-34 thumping over Nazareth (0-2).

It was as if the Patriots took a page out of Oregon's offensive playbook and scored at will, severely outmatching a Blue Eagles squad that struggled throughout the night figuring out how to stop Freedom's offense.

The 67-point effort is the second most points scored by a Freedom squad in school history, as they scored 76 in 2011 against Allen, but the offense, the points and the rout masked what really can be the true story of this year's Freedom football team.

Head coach Jason Roeder spoke to the team afterward and echoed the sentiments of winning back the Freedom family from the student body, administration, community and alumni.

Winning back the Freedom family almost seems just as important as winning games for this year's Pates.

"Listen, when you go 2-8, a lot of the times all you have is each other," said Roeder. "I don't want to keep harping on that from last year, because that's in the past, but a lot of these guys are back and we've learned from that. We've stayed together through tough times and we have a plan to keep getting better every day."

One of those players that endured last year's difficult ride is senior Jake Young.

Young scored three touchdowns in the win over Nazareth, recovering a blocked punt in the end zone to start the game, catching a 21-yard TD pass from his younger brother, Joe, in the second quarter and then returning the opening kickoff of the second half 87 yards to cap off a memorable night.

"We have the potential to put up these kind of numbers," said Young, "but it's a different story to actually do it. This was our first home game and we wanted to do this for our fans. It's a huge win for us that boosts our confidence and we just want to keep winning."

With Freedom now sitting at 2-0 heading into this week's tilt at Emmaus (1-1), Roeder and company know that they have to keep this momentum going in order to fulfill the ambition of this team.

Seven different players scored for the Patriots last week, as Freedom racked up 467 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Joe Young, who is quickly growing into one of the best QB's in the league, was nearly flawless, going 10-of-11 for 161 yards and two scores, including 59 rushing yards and a touchdown. Joe Santos chipped 106 yards rushing and touchdown to lead the Freedom rushing attack, while Jake Young led the receiving corp with five catches for 70 yards and a score.

Freedom went through the entire game without punting until their final drive of the fourth quarter.

It was as perfect of an offensive performance could have been, but there's still plenty of work to be done.

"It feels great," Roeder said. "You preach to the kids to do the right things and when you get a tangible result, it's great. Our kids are playing hard, they're playing fast and they're playing together."

All part of the formula to win back the Freedom family.
