Volleyball gets a win

The Whitehall girls volleyball team made sure they would also get the season started off on the right foot, sweeping the Huskies to begin play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

The Zephs traveled to Allentown on Tuesday afternoon to inaugurate the new 2014 season. They abruptly put their summer lessons to work, winning 25-14, 25-8 and 25-10.

The win was a good start for a team that's looking to take play hard each and every game. As they prepared for the upcoming season this summer, head coach Laura Hausman's credo was to concentrate on the small picture and play every point, rather than worry about the big picture regarding wins and losses.

"We were just focused on doing the things we've been working on," said head coach Laura Hausman. "They executed the little things we were talking about."

With a good mix of vets and newcomers, the Zephs were able to put those lessons to use against the Huskies. They got stronger as the match progressed, withstanding the heat, both physically and mentally.

With the temperature outside soaring into the 90s, Hausman said it was hot in Dieruff's gym. However, the girls persevered and didn't lose their focus.

Hausman said they began a little slow to start the match, but picked it up toward the end.

"It was nice to see us persevere after starting a little slow," she said. "Toward the end they got excited about some things and came together and won."

With a new system to digest under Hausman, she said the team has been adapting well. They're main objective is to simply play as hard as they can the entire match.

"Anything I ask of them, they do it the first time," she said. "They ask a lot of questions and they want to learn. You really can't ask for more than that."

From the frontline play to their backline play, Hausman said that "everything was very good."

She said they had a good rotation up front, mixing in a number of players who all contributed.

"Everyone did their job," said Hausman. "Everyone got their time in to show what they've been working on."

The Zephs will next host Freedom on Sept. 4.
