Parkland breezes past Bethlehem Catholic
In the midst of a stretch that includes four games in six days, Parkland field hockey head coach Michelle Steele sought a way to give her players as much rest as possible in the upcoming days.
After her Lady Trojans built an early 3-0 lead against Bethlehem Catholic on Tuesday, Steele sat a number of her starting players shortly after in preparation for the rest of the week, which includes games at Governor Mifflin (Wednesday) and Liberty (Thursday).
But despite the exit of seniors Hannah Pany and Avery Semler, who were First-Team All-League selections in 2013, amongst others, the Lady Trojans didn't miss a beat.
Sophomore Maya Rodgers scored back-to-back goals 2:37 apart to help push the Lady Trojanslead to 6-0 at halftime before earning the 6-1 victory over the Golden Hawks (0-2) at Parkland High School.
"We have three games this week, back-to-back-to-back," Steele said. "With that, as well as the heat and humidity, and the fact it's their first week of school, we were just trying to give them the rest."
"There are definitely younger girls that can come in," Semler said. "Their classes are bigger than the upperclassmen. They have been playing longer than we have. They started when they were little."
Semler got the Lady Trojans on the scoreboard not even three minutes into the contest after cleaning up a loose ball in front of Becahi's goal.
That score began a string of three goals in the first seven minutes of play. Junior Madison Pope and senior Brooke Sherwin added scores 1:05 apart to give the Lady Trojans (2-1) that early advantage.
"We have high expectations this year," Semler said. "We have really good chemistry on and off the field, so I think that helps our play on the field. We really want to go far this year. We have really good senior leadership. I think that helps and carries down toward the freshmen."
The Lady Trojans start five sophomores-Hannah Daniels, Brynn Lansenderfer, Jenna Lysakowski, Kora Murphy and Grace Royer. Rodgers is one of the first substitutions off of the bench, and her two goals in the first half gave the Lady Trojans a 5-0 lead.
When the second half began, Rodgers remained in the game at the forward position. Steele also inserted a number of freshman and sophomores to lessen the workload on her starting lineup.
Besides a late Becahi goal with 10:40 to play, the Lady Trojans were able to keep their distance.
"They're aggressive. They're feisty, and they'll fight hard," Steele said. "We are definitely a young team. Our junior class is small. We only have four juniors, and two of them play varsity."
The Lady Trojans outshot the Golden Hawks 14-2. Senior Sydney Cope started in goal, and freshman Brie Barraco played the entire second half, finishing with two saves.
Results from Wednesday's game at Governor Mifflin were not available at time of press. Thursday's game at Liberty is at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium at 5 p.m.
"The girls are doing a great job," Steele said. "We have great senior leadership this year, and it makes a huge difference with the team overall. They are really coming together nicely, and playing well as a team."
"It's a good atmosphere here," Semler said. "It's a really good program, and I know she [Steele] is really looking to build it and make it a successful one. We're just trying to help her do that."
