LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls off to a fast start

The Whitehall field hockey team has gotten off to a rousing start to begin the 2014 campaign.

Winners of two consecutive games to start the season, the Zephs have scored 16 goals during that span, an outburst that's pleased head coach Emily Repsher.

"The scoring has looked really good," said Repsher. "Our combinations are working and we're able to get the ball in the back of the cage."

The Zephs latest win was a 6-0 whitewash of Freedom on Tuesday. While the action wasn't strictly in Freedom's end during the contest, the Zephyrs ability to capitalize on their chances (18 shots on goal) made the difference.

The Zephs complemented their scoring prowess with some stingy defense. They only allowed one shot on goal, the lone strike steered away by goalkeeper Gabby Henninger.

Repsher said the newer additions are adapting well on the back line and she hopes that continues as their schedule gets tougher.

One goal that was indicative of their two-way play came late in the game on an offensive rush by Freedom. As the Patriot forward looked for an opening along the left sideline deep in Whitehall territory, midfielder Cara Bonshak deftly robbed the opposing player of the ball and launched a long outlet pass that found the stick of Kylee Cunningham. Kylee Cunningham's shot sailed across the goal mouth where it was eventually picked up by Kourtney Cunningham who promptly put it in the back of the net for the team's fifth goal.

The final goal was also notched by Kourtney Cunningham. On this occasion, Kourtney Cunningham weaved through defenders starting at the top of the circle, and then uncorked a blast that rattled the back of the cage to end the scoring.

All in all, it was quite a day for Kourtney and Kassidy Cunningham who finished with three goals apiece. Kourtney Cunningham also had three assists in the win.

Over two games, Kourtney Cunningham has four goals and six assists.

Repsher said their fast start is just a matter of being aggressive and playing well as a unit.

"We just came out really hard," said Repsher. "The team's really working well together."

Repsher said their corners are also working well, another area that's led to some goals. They're also finding a level of comfort with one another that's aided their development.

The Zephs finished with 10 corners against the Pates, while Freedom only managed three.

Even when they've met some adversity against the Pates, she said they simply stuck with the game plan.

"Today was definitely a challenge in the beginning, but we found our way through on the grass," she said.

In the 10-0 win versus the Huskies, the Zephs had contributions across the board. Repsher said it was good to work in a lot of players in that game as they finished with 24 shots.

In addition to Kourtney Cunningham, Taylor George, Kylee Cunningham (2), Rachel Schannauer and Bonshak scored first-half goals. In the second half, Bonshak Schannauer, Kylee Cunningham and Kassidy Cunningham all found the back of the net.

Additionally, Tianna Rivers had two assists as did Caitlin Cunningham.
