Catty set to take on Bangor
On any account, it would be safe to say Catasauqua's football would have a different look and likely, a different outcome than its previous season.
The days of the Roughies' recent five-year flurry when they posted an overall 48-17 record, including a 13-2 mark last season and mounted the hardware of two Colonial League championships, a district title, and a state playoff berth may be temporarily behind them.
All-state performers Zac Bradley, Ra'Von Burton, Paryss Marshall, and Jared Nosal have moved to different addresses, and coach Tom Falzone and athletic director Tom Moll are directing a new regime at Nazareth.
Still, when this year's Roughies' version steps onto Alumni Field Friday night against Bangor, some expectations will still be afloat, while most will look to take a new flight.
"We are coming into this season as defending district champions and I don't want these kids to lose sight of that," said new coach Phil Dorn. "We had some great players who achieved some great things to leave the program. But they left the program heading in a new direction."
Senior Brandon Keks and junior Cristian Burker both were competing for the starting quarterback job during the last week of practice.
Dorn stated both quarterbacks would see action in the opener and he wasn't sure who would take the first snap.
Both Keks, who saw some time last year, and Burker took an equal amount of snaps this summer.
"Both of them are going to play," said Dorn. "Each of them has stood out. In our two scrimmages, we put six touchdowns into the end zone. If one of them goes in and really has things going, we'll leave him in there.
"Right now, we don't know who will be our starter for the rest of the year, but we should find out after this game."
Senior running back Mike Shutta, who missed the first scrimmage, had a strong showing in the team's second scrimmage, and Dorn expects him to have a breakout season.
Up front, the Roughies' linemen continue to develop.
"We have a lot of new faces there," said Dorn. "But the kids are really starting to come together. They did a nice job in both scrimmages."
Bangor, 3-7 last year under first-year head coach Donnie Hawk, will look to run the single wing with a new backfield in place.
Running back Phil Voss, who was among the leading rushers in the area the past few seasons, is gone along with quarterback Jyri Davis. Like Catty, Bangor had plenty of new faces in camp.
"They look like the same type of Bangor team I saw when I coached at Pocono Mountain East," said Dorn who said he and his staff evaluated from film. "They are big and physical. They will look to run the ball right at you.
"Running the offense they do, we need to keep them in second- and third-and long. We will need to stop them early and can't allow them to have long runs.
"On defense, they (Bangor) will be physical on the line, and they also have some good athletes at linebacker and in the secondary.
"We'll have a battle, but our kids will be ready. If we are able to do what we can, we'll be OK."
Bangor went 3-7 last year with running back Phil Vass and quarterback Jyri Davis being the majority of the offense. Both players have graduated, and second-year coach Donnie Hawk is implementing a single-wing attack.
