An unusual, free form wooden sign has been rescued from obscurity next to the old Upper Milford Township building and now enjoys pride of place near the main entrance to the new township office building. And soon it will look even better, after Boy Scout Casey Moyer completes his Eagle project, which involves plantings and other landscaping improvements at the base of the sign.
According to Upper Milford Township Manager Daniel DeLong, the sign dates back to 1975, when it was designed by John Gabellini Jr. and carved by Raymond Schmaldinst. It has numbered stars on it which are to designate historic sites in the township, but at this point, a key has to be created to identify those sites, DeLong said.
According to Upper Milford Historical Society secretary Rose Parry, a member of the recreation commission brought the deteriorating condition of the sign to the attention of the commission.
Due to the historical nature of the sign, the commission referred the issue to the Upper Milford Historical Society and also recommended the sign be moved to the present township building, where it will be seen and appreciated by more people.
Upper Milford Historical Society President Neil Moser and society member John Fegley took the sign down from its previous location and refurbished it. After their work was completed, the sign was installed at its new location at the township building and is awaiting completion of the landscaping work. The whole effort took just a few months, Parry said.
