LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Lutron makes annual donation to emergency services

Lutron representatives made their annual donation Aug. 21 to Lower Macungie Township Emergency Services.

Andy Hines, director of facilities and Ron Morris, local plant manager, presented Alburtis and Lower Macungie fire departments and Macungie Ambulance Corps with checks for $1,000 each.

Township Manager Bruce Fosselman said this is the sixth year Lutron has made this contribution.

In other business, the Alburtis Crossings Industrial Park revised plan was approved by the commissioners. The site for the development is 2949 and 3041Schoeneck Road and 3100 Alburtis Road.

This approval brings questions on the Schoeneck Road and Route 100 intersection. Township Engineer William Erdman said the plan for this project is awaiting a PennDOT permit. Construction is projected to begin in spring of 2015.

The vote was 3-2 for changing the zoning for the five-acre Dadonna property at the corner of Spring Creek Road and Trexlertown Road. The property had an old farmhouse and a barn torn down last year.

Commissioners Ron Beitler and Douglas Brown voted no to this rezoning. This authorizes advertisement for a public hearing and input from the regional planning commission. This is the normal procedure for a rezoning request. Beitler said traffic studies should be done before the zoning change and suggested less intense commercial use. There is only one entrance for this property. Brown made no comment.

A resident from Ancient Oak West, Mike Siegel, who had past experience with zoning and planning in another community, agreed this property is no longer suitable for residential use but strongly suggested it not be used for a convenience store like Wawa or Scheetz.

Junk yard licenses were approved for three areas in existence for a long period of time. The existing properties are on Mertztown Road, Chestnut Road in Alburtis and Minesite Road.

The commissioners began using iPads at the meeting instead of paper. The paper usage savings is believed will pay for these iPads in a short amount of time.

The usage of sports fields for the Lower Macungie Youth Association is continuing with the agreement for 1998 no longer used. The proposal is with counsel and needs to be clarified. A resolution will be developed.

The request for an additional school zone along Sauerkraut Lane will not happen. However, the traffic on Sauerkraut Lane will be watched for further consideration.

The request for "quiet zones" for trains will not be considered. The area mentioned is a very dangerous area and extreme caution is necessary.

The Wolbach Subdivision Waiver requests were discussed. After lengthy discussions, it was decided to not make any decisions during this meeting due to confusion and multiple solutions.

With the completion of the Route 222 bypass, it was the understanding this road would alleviate traffic problems in the area. However, this road has two times the amount of traffic predicted for this road. A traffic simulation study has been completed. However, additional work is needed in the eastern portion of the corridor. The areas being checked are Route 100, Route 22 and Route 78.

The traffic simulation studies behaviors of traffic including number of lanes, amount of traffic at various times of the day, week, seasons, behaviors of individual drivers from age perspective and so on. Bottlenecks are studied. By remedying one of them it can change other areas or create a new bottleneck somewhere else.

The commissioners granted a one to two month extension to further add to this report.
