George H. King

George H. King, 83, of Macungie, died Aug. 10, 2014, in his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Anne King. They were married for 41 years.

He graduated from Bernards High School in 1948 prior to joining the Army the following year. He served until 1952, including two years spent in Korea attaining the rank of sergeant.

Commencing his career in law enforcement as just the third member of the Watchung, N.J., police department in 1958, he rose through the ranks to the position of Chief of Police in the borough in 1984, a position he held until retirement in 1997. His four decades spent in the chosen profession of public service culminated with election as president of the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association by his fellow chiefs. In addition he served in both county and international organizations during his tenure as chief, as well as participating in many seminars and training exercises over the years in his capacity as peace officer.

He spent 23 years as an elected member of the Lebanon Township, N.J., Board of Education. His activities included association in social and charitable organizations such as the Rotarians, the Masons, American Legion and VFW, along with innumerable volunteer positions.

He is survived by his wife; sister, Katherine McAlick and fiance Steve Bebee, of Bound Brook, N.J.; sons, George, of South Plainfield, N.J., and Wayne, of Long Island City, N.Y.; daughter, Patricia and her husband Alan Kerl; brother-in-law, John Ammon and his wife Tisha, of Macungie; brother-in-law George Ammon and his wife Phyllis, of Omrond Beach, Fla.; several nieces, nephews; grandsons Jason and Justin; granddaughters, Jennifer Mitchell and Katie Beisel; six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann and a son, Robert Schmiede.
