LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

WESTERN SALISBURY COLUMN

Yes, the start of the school year is right around the proverbial corner and something we will all see coming around the street corner is that bright, yellow school bus.

August is School Bus Safety Month. Remember if a bus has its lights flashing and arm extended, you must stop. If you are behind a bus, the law requires you to stop at least 10 feet away. Getting stopped for a bus safety violation can earn you: five points on your driving record, a 60-day license suspension and a hefty fine. So, for the safety of our children and the safety of your money, keep an eye out for school buses starting next week.

Salisbury Township School District starts off the 2014-2015 school year with an orientation day Aug. 25. The only students who need to report are those in kindergarten, first grade, sixth grade, ninth grade and students in the high school who are new to the district. Regular bussing will be provided by the school district.

On Aug. 26, all students report for the first official full day of school. All district schools will be closed Aug. 29 and Sept. 1 to celebrate the Labor Day holiday.

Does anyone remember how the Foehrkolb family celebrates the end of summer? Per tradition from the year Justus went to kindergarten, we will be packing our picnic basket and heading to the Lehigh Parkway to eat Subway hoagies and McDonald's french fries. I would love to take our puppy Riley along this year, but we need to follow the vet's instructions and not take her to any public places until she has all her vaccinations. Sadly, she won't have them completed for another two weeks. She will definitely be going next year.

The mission statement of Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church is: "To welcome all people, share Christ's love for one another and help to make Christ visible in daily life." The church is showing they live this mission by throwing their second annual community picnic 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24 on the Triangle across from Salisbury Middle School. There will be tents, tables, volleyball, other games and, of course, hot dogs and hamburgers. Enjoy a time to sit, relax and get to know each other.

The Devonshire yard waste drop off will be open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 2 and 6.
