Football scrimmages allow teams to learn about themselves

It was the first weekend of football scrimmages and each of Bethlehem's head football coaches came away from the results feeling positive.

As usual, each team encountered their share of hiccups in their first organized activity against another opponent, but there were also positives to take away.

Liberty head coach John Truby saw his team start slow against Williamsport before the Hurricanes finished strong.

"Overall, we were able to move the ball and score," Truby said. "Doug Erney looked good running the offense. Darius Jones, Izaian Avent, Tyrique Santiago and Victor Santiago stood out at skills. Lou Csaszar and Devon Lindeman did well blocking up front and we played fast defensively and found some playmakers."

The Hurricanes hope to parlay those results into this week's scrimmage against Delaware Valley.

Bethlehem Catholic squared off against Quakertown and head coach Joe Henrich came back with mixed results.

"We saw some of the good, bad and ugly," he said. "We scored a couple touchdowns and allowed one on the other end, but we still have things we have to clean up. We weren't at full strength either, as some guys sat out with injuries, but we'll be ready to go against Abington Heights this week."

Freedom took on CB East last week and head coach Jason Roeder saw his team score on their first two series of offense.

"Both teams scored twice, but I think we outgained them [CB East] 255 yards to 110 yards," Roeder said. "Joe Young did throw a pick-six, which was a tough one, but it was an overall good day for us."

Roeder didn't commit to a specific quarterback, as Young and Jonah Gundrum are both squaring off for the quarterback spot.

Gundrum's versatility as a wide receiver may ultimately make the decision easier for Roeder's staff as they head into the season, which comes with a pit-stop in Central Dauphin this Thursday for their final scrimmage.

"We're evaluating things everyday," he said in regards to the QB competition. "This is going to be a good test for us against Central Dauphin and it's the type of game we need to prepare for our regular season in the EPC."
