Positive feelings about past, future
Catasauqua head track and field coach Glen Reightler was positive about the results of this past season, and he is also optimistic about the future.
"I thought we had a good year," said the veteran coach. "We didn't win any meets, but we had a lot of outstanding performances in the season and the postseason. We weren't in the best shape we could have been in, but overall, things went well.
"We had a handful of people who did well in the league meet, districts, and then went on to states."
Senior Paryss Marshall took a ninth-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-2. Marshall, one of eight seniors who will move on, also had a stellar performance in the district meet in the hurdles.
"We'll miss a guy like Paryss," said Reightler. "He (Marshall) had a good year for us, and he was among a good group of seniors who provided leadership for us over the past four years."
Junior Trinity Henderson finished 10th at the state meet in the shot put. She advanced there by finishing second in the district meet in the same event. Henderson also threw well in the discus and javelin at the district meet, as he placed among the top 15 in each event.
"Trinity (Henderson) had a solid year for us," said Reightler. "She was throwing just a few feet off. But she'll be back and we expect good things from her."
Fellow junior Ricky Houser finished 12th in the state meet at the triple jump. He advanced with a second-place finish at districts in which he jumped just under 44 feet.
"Ricky (Houser) really came a long way," noted Reightler. "He came on at the end of last season, and we were looking for good things for him this season. He was very consistent for us all season long."
Seniors Ty Kern, who finished third in districts in the pole vault; Isiah Berry, who excelled all season in the field events; and Rhaine Sziy, who was steady in the javelin, all had solid outings all year long for the Roughies.
Fellow senior Ra'Von Burton was consistent in the sprints and relay races all season. Houser and sophomore Nick Rossnagle will return to anchor the relay races and they will look to replace teammates Burton and Marshall.
On the girls' side, sophomore Quinn Bachman and junior Gabby Bachman will also be back in the fold for next season.
"We will have a good number of girls coming back," said Reightler. "On the boys' side, we will be looking to replace some people. We'll just have to keep working to get better for next year."
