The Allen Township Supervisors may render their decision tonight on whether to allow FedEx Ground to build a 1.2-million square foot package distribution center off Willowbrook Road.
The potential distribution site has been an ongoing concern of area residents who have objected to the potential for noise and increased traffic.
Although the land is zoned industrial, residents such as Robert Nappa of East Bullshead Road have been vocal in opposition to the proposal at planning commission meetings and a recent supervisors meeting. Nappa said he has also spoken to other residents regarding the issue.
The township planning commission two months ago unanimously recommended the supervisors approve the FedEx Ground warehouses. As lead developer, the Rockefeller Group is a vital component of the overall project.
The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority at a recent meeting voted to sell the land in question.
State Gov. Tom Corbett is also aboard, recently awarding a $500,000 grant to go toward extensive road widening and improvements to the area.
Hanover Township, Lehigh County, which had an engineering study performed, has met with FedEx representatives, and resolved most but not all concerns. They met, along with PennDOT representative, in a closed-door session Tuesday.
If approval is granted, it will likely have conditions attached.
The $336 million project includes road improvements on Airport Road, Race Street and Willowbrook Road.
Supporters of the plan say the first phase of the warehouse business would create 700 jobs, growing later to 3,000 jobs.
