Council discusses pool

As the Northampton Borough swimming pool closes its doors for the season this weekend planning continues for another program that has developed its own tradition of sorts.

The borough's swimming pool will be open for its final day Aug. 16. Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said the pool season depends each summer on the availability of lifeguards. Most of the lifeguards will be returning to college campuses soon.

Council President John Yurish said the borough pool had a successful year. Unlike years in the past, when there were serious water leaks and other maintenance issues to contend with, the summer was relatively quiet, with credit going to the public works department.

Although the cooler than usual summer weather kept attendance unseasonably lower than usual, overall the season was a success.

The pool dates back to the 1950s and has kept up with various upgrades over the years. Also, events such as Dip-N-Dances are now standard fare.

In other business in the borough, the Sister Cities celebration between Stegersbach, Austria, and Northampton, will occur on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Burgenland State and Stegersbach, from time to time, send delegations and residents to the borough's Sister Cities event. Stegersbach has a Sister Cities monument and celebrates the occasion each year as well.

The borough celebration will begin with an official program at the Sister Cities monument on Laubach Avenue. A polka party and picnic will then be held at the municipal park.
