EASTERN SALISBURY COLUMN Back to school shopping lists available on district website

Ready, set…shop! It's that time of the year when parents begin to purchase school supplies for their kids.

For a complete list of supplies needed for your student, follow the links from the Salisbury School District website at www. stsd.org. Listed are school supplies for Harry S Truman Elementary School, Western Salisbury Elementary School, Salisbury Middle School and Salisbury High School.

Lists are available as PDF's for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. This makes it convenient to print and shop. Shopping tip: Don't disregard thrift shops for new school supplies. Recently, I scooped up an unopened pack of loose notebook paper– $.50 for 150 sheets at a local Goodwill.

Salisbury students in grades kindergarten, first, sixth and ninth have their orientation Aug. 25.

Remaining grades are scheduled to report Aug. 26. For orientation details, contact your child's school or go to the district website.

Get ready to share the road with frequently traveled school buses. Here are some things to be mindful of when spotting a school bus. The law requires you to stop if a school bus has its lights flashing and stop arm extended. One exception is if you are on the other side of a highway split by a concrete barrier or a median. The law also states drivers must stop at least 10 feet away if following or traveling alongside a school bus. For more information on school bus stopping laws and penalties, visit www.JustDrivePA.com.

Another important week landing on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Calendar is National Stop on Red Week which runs Aug. 15 through Sept. 1.

The purpose of this designated week is to educate Americans on the dangers of red-light running by using education and enforcement. If you're interested in starting community awareness on this topic, go to www.safety. fhwa.gov.
