Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners at its workshop Monday discussed the pending major reconstruction of Columbia Street.
The other major streets improvement program scheduled is Ruch Street, where utilities and pavement construction was performed earlier.
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said projections for the huge road improvements are estimated at $360,000. The funding is in the 2014 budget.
Hozza reported Columbia Street and the Ruch Street improvements are on the 2014 calendar. Work on the major projects will get underway in the next several weeks.
Ruch Street is a joint project with the Borough of Coplay, a boundary street between Stiles and the borough.
When the commissioners meet this coming Monday, the board will vote on legislation authorizing the acceptance of a proposal for performing street resurfacing using full depth reclamation for the township's public works bureau. The process, using specialized equipment for the reclamation aspect of improvements to the street, has been used previously in the township.
In a somewhat related matter, the commissioners will have on their agenda a proposal for purchasing road materials for the public works bureau.
Also, the board expressed no opposition to the proposed Tesla Motors Inc. supercharging station to be located on Lehigh Valley Mall property, the only such facility in the region. The board is expected to vote on a land development plan for the project, which Hozza said is a plus for the mall, the township and motorists with their specially equipped vehicles.
