Historic marker is dedicated in Catty

The borough of Catasauqua is a community steeped in history and lore.

It's a community that contributed greatly to the founding of the United States of America and the Industrial Revolution.

In honor of Catasauqua's many contributions during the nation's early founding, on July 23, the community was bestowed its fifth historical marker during a ceremony at The Phoenix Forge Group, 800 Front St.

The marker was dedicated in honor of the former Bryden Horse Shoe Works site.

The Phoenix Forging Co., based in Catasauqua, dedicated the marker to the community.

Established in 1882, the Bryden Horse Shoe Works plant is believed to be one of the largest in the world at that time. The plant produced a wide variety of horseshoes in Catasauqua. Thousands of Bryden shoes were supplied to the British War Department during the years of 1899-1910 as well as during and after the Boer War.

In 1983, Bryden became the Phoenix Manufacturing Co., converting its production to commercial forging.

At a July 26 dedication ceremony for the new marker, Dr. William V. Lewis Jr., commissioner of the Pennsylvania Historic Museum Commission, said there are roughly 2,100 historical markers across the state of Pennsylvania. The Bryden Horse Shoe marker, he said, is special.

"This is particularly a very intriguing marker," he said. "The horseshoes that were made here were transported throughout the world."

Lewis said Catasauqua should be proud of the many historical markers found in the community.

"It's just a wonderful thing for a community," he said. "This is a well-marked area."

Larry Dildine, president of The Phoenix Forge Group, unveiled the marker to those in attendance.

Catasauqua Borough Council President Vincent Smith said it is a privilege and honor to receive such a designation.

The marker will be placed on the side of the The Phoenix Forging Co. building wall. The business is located at 800 Front St.

Local artist Robert LeFevre also presented paintings to The Phoenix Forging Co. The painting will be placed inside the company for visitors to view.

"HCPA [Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association] is very proud to dedicate this, our fifth marker, in Catasauqua," said HCPA President Betsy Hillenbrand.

Other historic markers in Catasauqua include those commemorating Biery's Port, David Thomas, the Crane Iron Works and the the Dery Silk Mill.
