Chestnut Grove sewer improvements put on hold

Hanover Township put money in this year's capital budget to make improvements to sewer mains on Chestnut Grove.

The allocated funds would lead to improvements to half of the system. The remaining half of the project is budgeted and scheduled for 2015.

At Hanover council's regular meeting July 16, township Engineer Fredrick Hay reviewed the project.

"The system is tied together and it is not costeffective to do it a half at a time," he said.

Hay proposed the project be pushed to next year and completed together.

"It would save us about $50,000 in construction costs," he said.

He also assured council the sewer could last for another year without incurring major maintenance expenses.

The council reviewed the township's Home Rule Charter in a private session earlier in the month. Based on comments made by the council, township Solicitor Jackson Eaton prepared a slew of changes.

Most of the changes are technical in nature, but changes to the charter must be approved by the voters in a referendum.

Eaton said he will consult with the Lehigh County Election Board to determine how the changes can be presented on the ballot.

The objective for Eaton's discussion is to determine how the number of changes and the details are presented to minimize problems voters may have in understanding the need for the revision.

Fire Chief Robin Yoder, acting on behalf of Chestnut Grove neighbors, complained the area is seeing a large number of skunks roaming the backyard areas.

The appearance of skunks is new this year, according to Yoder. He asked council to assist homeowners in reducing the problem.
