Summer basketball is officially over for local area schools and Liberty saw their season end last week in the quarterfinals of the Stellar Summer League.
The Hurricanes fell to Central Catholic 50-41 to wrap up things before August got underway, but head coach Chad Landis feels he got what he needed from the two months of action in the league, as well as in the Stellar Showcase and at SportsFest.
"We reached the goals we had for the summer for a team with a lot of new pieces and moving parts," Landis said. "You're really trying to get some good games together for guys and figure out what exactly we have as a team.
"There's a lot of new guys and you want to see them tested in different situations and see how they react."
Liberty's three leading seniors figure to be the base of the program moving into next winter, with Jaevan Dobbins, Trenton Bishop and Ludwin Gonzalez carrying the torch.
Dobbins and Bishop, along with 6-foot-5 sophomore center, Cameron Hoffman, give Landis high hopes for his front line.
"I'm very happy with our forwards and center play," he said. "I like our bigs, but we need more consistent guard play to go with it."
Finding answers to unknown questions is what matters the most in summer and it seems that Landis and company have solid footing once basketball picks up in the fall.
Until then, Landis won't rush his guys back into the gym.
"Once they get on me about getting in the gym, we'll start playing again," he said. "But I'm going to enjoy the rest of this summer, just as they should too."
