The Rev. Douglas Caldwell was a common feature at gatherings across the Lehigh Valley for many years. With a genuine warm smile and a firm handshake, he made every one of a hundred guests feel welcome at events ostentatious and rudimentary. His drawled, laughing tones made every meeting feel a bit like a sit-down with an old friend.
He retired from the Central Moravian Church in 2009, but left decades of teachings, good community works and powerful relationships in his wake.
Caldwell died Thursday in Hanover Township at age 72.
Born is Charlotte, NC, Caldwell came to Moravian College after high school in 1966 and following graduation from Moravian Theological Seminary in 1969 he served as pastor at College Hill Moravian Church. He was named pastor of the Central Moravian Church is 1983.
Caldwell was a board member of Moravian College, St. Luke's University Health Network and the Bethlehem Area Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by a daughter, Ashley, a son, Doug Jr., all of Pennsylvania, and a sister, Mary Lynn Caldwell Morrill of Charlotte.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Moravian Church, 73 W. Church St.
