Klein, LV suffer early exit
Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team was eliminated from the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic after falling to Berks County, 2-0, and Delaware South, 6-1, on June 23.
Whitehall High School infielder, Karly Klein, who played on the tournament team, said, "The first pitcher just really put us in a ditch. Then they switched pitchers, and we got a couple hits off her."
In Lehigh Valley's second game against Delaware South, Freedom High School's Megan Brown scored on a ground out after hitting a double to left center field. It would be Lehigh Valley's only run in the double-elimination tournament held at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
"Their pitcher had a lot of movement. We couldn't adjust. [Defensively,] we were playing in different positions, but that had nothing to do with hits," said Klein. "Practically their whole team was lefties. We were joking about that in the dugout."
Klein played at first base in the first game and third base in the second game.
"It was a little odd since I haven't played [at third base] since freshman year. It was a lot different since I got used to playing at first," she said.
Despite the end result, the Lehigh Valley team took the losses in stride.
"It was really nice at the end because we all made new friends. That was the best part since we lost right away. We just had a bad day," she said.
The Carpenter Cup Softball Classic also served as a showcase for college coaches.
"Alvernia was there, that I was aware of and that I was in contact with, but there were others," said Klein.
Unlike most players from the Lehigh Valley team, Klein does not play tournament softball; instead, she will return to basketball for the rest of the summer.
Regarding the Carpenter Cup, however, Klein said, "I would if I could do it again. It was just a great experience, getting everyone from all different teams together."
