Cerrone, Yost earn LVRR scholarships
The Lehigh Valley Road Runners recently presented their annual scholarships to several high school runners and one gymnast.
The LVRR, an Emmaus-based running club, awards annual scholarships to four high school track and cross country runners from Lehigh or Northampton counties, while also giving out three awards to Emmaus High School athletes.
The four regional scholarships, which are worth $4,000 each, were awarded to a pair of Northwestern runners in Haley Yost and Ryan Cerrone, along with Parkland Lucas Crampton and Suacon Valley's Liz Chikotas.
Yost, who will continue her career at Eastern Kentucky University while majoring in pre-med biology, was a four-year cross country and track letter winner. In cross coutnry she qualified for states twice and finished fourth overall last fall. She was also furth at AAU nationals in 2013.
In track, Yost qualfied for states three straight years. She was also a member of Key Club, student council, as well as serving as a volunteer at Cedarbrook and a boys basketball manager.
Cerrone, who will attend Penn State and major in computer engineering, was a four-year letter winning in cross country, serving as team captain last fall. He was a two-time state qualifier in cross country.
Cerrone earned three letters in track and was a captain of that team as a senior. He qualified for states in the 4x400 relay. Cerrone is also an member of the National Honor Society, Sience Honor Society, school board representative and volunteers with the Krista Hankee Memorial Fund.
Chikotas is also headed to Penn State where she will major in mechanical engineering. She was a four-year cross country letter winner and the 2013 state champion. In track, she was a three-year letter winning and state champ in both the 3200- and 1600-meter runs.
Crampton, who is going on to George Washington University to major in international studies, was a two-year letter winning in cross country, a team captain last fall and a two-time state qualifier. He also lettered twice in track and was a district qualifier in track.
Crampton volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and St. Luke's Hospital. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.
LVRR also awards three $2,000 scholarship to Emmaus High School athletes. Two are given to runners and the third, which debuted this year, is for an EHS athlete whose family has been a member of LVRR for at least three years.
The Emmaus runners scholarships went to Hanna Brosky and Jordan Frank. The new scholarship was given to gymnast Colin Coates, who is headed to Penn State University.
The Road Runners had more applicants this year than any previous year. The organization presented the awards on July 2 at its clubhouse in the Lehigh Parkway.
