Boys win 1 at Stellar
Catasauqua's boys' and girls' basketball teams recently had positive experiences overall at the Stellar basketball tournament despite both squads posting identical 1-2 overall records.
Catty's boys, under veteran head coach Eric Snyder, began the tournament with a 54-46 victory over Pleasant Valley before they dropped a game to eventual champion Parkland. In the consolation round, the Roughies lost a game to Philadelphia-based Washington.
"We had a nice game against Pleasant Valley," said Snyder. "When we got Parkland, we knew it would be difficult. They (Parkland) are very good and I don't know who could beat them. We were in a tight game against Washington, but they took over the game in the second half.
"The bottom just fell out for us in the second half (against Washington) and we didn't have it. But it was a good experience for us."
Snyder credited the play of guards Dakota Schiffer and Dave Wetherhold, both of whom will likely be his backcourt this winter. He also cited the play of forwards Derrick Bond and Sean Klobosits, both of whom will be a force up front. Swingmen Jake Kober and Shaquon Mason both were impressive in the tournament.
"Dakota (Schiffer) and Dave (Wetherhold) both really had a good game against Pleasant Valley," said Snyder. "Bond continues to play well and block shots for us. Klobosits reminds me a lot of (recent graduate) Anthony Brinkley because he can be in the right spot at the right time.
"Kober hustled all over the place, and Mason gave us a good spark off the bench."
Snyder is looking forward to the upcoming Sportsfest tournament this weekend. His club will be in pool play with Nazareth, Brooklyn, and Phoenixville.
