Lt. Col. Frank J. Slivka, 96, of Emmaus, died July 8, 2014, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. He was the husband of the late Mary (Haberchak) Slivka. Born in Nesquehoning, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Basala) Slivka.
He retired from the U.S. Army and also served in the Army Reserves National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He was in active duty in Europe and Africa during World War II and served domestically during the Korean War to provide mainland defense. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
He was employed as the classified advertising manager by the Allentown Morning Call prior to his retirement in 1981.
He was an active member of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Allentown, where he served as church president and dedicated pierogie maker.
He was a member of the Jordan-Martin Lodge 673 F&AM, Allentown and of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley, Allentown, 32nd degree.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara and her husband Warren Hess, of Breinigsville and Nancy and her husband Mark Rowan, of Landenberg; son, Dennis and his wife Debbie, of Coopersburg; two grandchildren, Greg Rowan, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Julia Rowan, of Landenberg.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Michael, Peter, George and John; sister, Mary Spack.
