Are you ready to take an inexpensive, day trip with your family? If so, pack up the car with a picnic lunch, bikes, fishing poles and bathing suits. Next, set your GPS for Lake Nockamixon State Park in Bucks County. The park has 5,286 acres to explore and is a little over 20 miles away from Allentown.
After arriving take a bike ride on one of the tree-lined trails on the parks' 10-mile biking trail system, or choose to take an energetic nature hike at the Marina on a winding, paved path that wraps around the outskirts of the lake.
Although it is prohibited to swim in the lake, the park has a swimming pool complete with two waterslides, fountains and a shallow end for children.
This is the place for boating, kayaking and windsurfing enthusiasts. The park has six public launching areas, docking facilities for 648 boats and a sailing club.
Visitors can catch a number of local fish such as bass, catfish carp and walleye at the 1,450 acre lake.
For those wishing to have an extended time at Lake Nockamixon, the park provides 10 furnished, electrically heated modern cabins available for rent year-round on its south side. Nockamixon engages in giving back to the community by providing a variety of environmental educational, interpretive and recreational programs to teach stewardship of natural resources. Offerings include children programs, teachers' workshops, guided walks, educational activities and more.
