Skate park project stalls, future in limbo

The proposed new use for the Northampton skate park seems to be in limbo, according to Borough Manager Gene Zarayko.

Council discussed possible options of creating a site for adults and children to roller derby or play street hockey.

Northampton resident, Brian Ruff appeared before borough council in May after reading a story in The Press about the deterioration and lack of use of the skate park.

The borough removed the broken wood ramps and cleaned out debris in the spring, indicating the whole park may be demolished.

Ruff said his idea for the park would be an asset to the community.

He said he envisions 100 children and a number of adults involved with the park.

Located at Lerchenmiller Drive and Smith Lane, Ruff told council several volunteers and he would clean up the site, remove existing ramps and set up the skate park at no expense to the borough.

"We have heard nothing since then from Mr. Ruff," Zarayko said.

Zarayko said an estimate for getting the skate site up and running, such as macadam, would cost $19,000, a cost he does not think the borough would bear at this time.

At the moment, Zarayko said he has no notion of closing the park, since the area is clean.

The park, on most days, is not in use by bicyclists or skateboarders.

Back in May, Council President John Yurish told Ruff the idea seemed good and council would discuss it before making a decision.
