LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Getting tails on trails

This spring, the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, St. Luke's University Health Network and Bethlehem Health Bureau joined for the kick-off event of the second year of Get Your Tail on the Trail, an initiative to encourage people of all ages and all activity levels to get outdoors, get active and explore nature by walking, running or biking the D&L Trail.

As part of the Get Your Tail on the Trail 2014 kickoff, nearly 300 students, teachers and chaperones from Calypso, Broughal, Donegan, Fountain Hill, Union Terrace and William Penn schools walked the trail at Sand Island and learn about the history of the trail and plant preservation efforts. The walkers also participated in a zumba class, interactrf with animals from Wildlands Conservancy, investigated St. Luke's HealthStar van and met a live mule, an integral part of the lock system on the canals.

St. Luke's will donate $250 and $500 respectively toward fitness equipment or an activity to schools in Leader In Me ® program that reach 5,000 miles and for those schools that reach 10,000 miles in the Get Your Tail on the Trail. The initial challenge launched in Spring of 2013 where 2,500 participants logged a total of 255,000 miles. The program continued through the winter of 2014 with 580 participants tracking 44,000 miles during the Winter Mini-Challenge.

To help exercisers log miles, St. Luke's and D&L will be hosting special events throughout the summer and fall near each St. Luke's campus. Details on these events can be found at www.tailonthetrail.org. Registration is encouraged. Please call St. Luke's InfoLink at 1-866-785-8537.
