Fire truck still on the market

A broker has been secured to assist with the sale of the old North Catasauqua Fire Department pumper truck. The Spartan/Darley model was recently replaced by a Rosenbaur pumper truck with an aerial ladder. The borough has sought bids on the old truck with no success. It is hoped that a broker can target fire companies in the market for a used truck.

At the June 24 North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting, Councilwoman Michele Hazzard questioned where the money will be deposited when the truck is sold.

Council President Joe Keglovits said some will go in the general fund to replace funds used to pay for change orders and add-ons not in the original fire truck loan amount obtained by the borough. The rest of the money will go into the Special Projects Fund, he said.

In the meantime, North Catasauqua firefighters are training on the new truck, which has state-of-the-art aerial ladder technology.

Two radios from the old truck are missing. Council members and borough staff discussed what steps should be taken.

"If they feel they were stolen, it should be reported," said Councilman Bill Nothstein.

Treasurer Annette Englert said she could check on the serial numbers she has on file to see who owns the radios, the fire company or the borough.

Borough Police Chief Kim Moyer said if they are stolen, they can be tracked, if someone tries to reprogram them for use.

They are valued at $2,000.

Councilman Michael Seng made a motion to authorize Moyer to investigate the radios' disappearance and to report them as stolen. Council approved the motion unanimously.

In other business, borough Secretary Nancy Knecht reported the office received a letter from the Borough of Catasauqua stating that memberships at the Catasauqua Pool will be extended to North Catasauqua residents at the same (reduced) rate charged for Catasauqua residents. Both daily and season ticket rates will be discounted.

Catasauqua Borough proposes it will track the response to this offer and will then will ask the North Catasauqua Borough to contribute to the cost of running the pool if there is a strong use by North Catasauqua residents.

Council members commented they understand the pool is currently underused compared to earlier years and the borough is having difficulty making it profitable.

"They're having a hard time making ends meet with the pool," Keglovits said. "It's a big expense."

Keglovits wondered what kind of a contribution Catasauqua would want from North Catasauqua. He said a plan to offer borough rates to North Casauqua residents had been tried before and the result had been that not many residents took advantage of it.

Also at the meeting:

· Englert announced Joe DeLabar would soon have the majority of the work done to build a website for the borough.

· Keglovits announced the new completion date for the Hokendauqua Bridge, estimated by Penn-DOT, is now June 2015. The original completion date had been December 2014.
