Catty Connie Mack needs late push for playoffs

Catasauqua head coach Phil Ferguson isn't quite sure what has happened to his team in the Lehigh Valley Connie Mack League the past few weeks.

At the beginning of the season, his squad was riding the crest of an early wave as they made an early run toward the top of the standings and remained among the league leaders.

Since then, they have hit the shore, dropping six-straight games and left them with an overall 6- 9-1 record.

Their latest defeat was a 4-0 loss to top seeded Pocono Mountain East. Catty will have a game with Northern Valley Thursday and a suspended game with Moore Township Friday in which they had a lead.

"We have been scoring runs and getting some good pitching, but we just have been dropping balls and not staying in games like we should," said Ferguson, whose club buoyed around the 12th spot as the top 10 clubs will make the postseason. "I did give them some days off to try something different.

"But we are still fighting for the playoffs. We have to take care of business and we'll need some help. We were probably too soft on them at the beginning, but we had a straight talk with them and told them what was at stake. We really don't know what happened, but we need to keep going in the right direction."

This Saturday, Travis Lebron, Colin Hawk, and Nate Pontician will represent Catty in the league all star game at Coplay. All three have played the infield and have been solid performers on the mound. Pontician, who pitched well in the team's recent loss, has been the team's most consistent hurler all season. Ferguson also cited the recent play of second baseman Rodney Berger, who also has been a regular contributor.

"All three of them have really helped us," said Ferguson. "Our pitching has been pretty solid and those three were keys for us. Nate (Pontician) has led the staff and Colin (Hawk) and Travis (Lebron) also have been steady for us."

Ferguson also noted the play of catcher Zack Bilder, who recently joined the team from the Central Whitehall League.

"He (Bilder) really helped us out when we were short," added Ferguson. "He is a young player who really played like he has been with us for a while. He is a player with a bright future."

Ferguson also believes his immediate future could still be bright enough for a postseason bid.
