Playoffs set to go
It'll be a jam-packed week of baseball action in NORCO Legion, as the playoffs officially kicked off last night for the top eight teams in the seedings.
The best-of-three series action includes three Bethlehem teams, as Bath, Freemansburg and the Wanderers qualified for the postseason.
Bath (12-6) earned a third-seed and opened the tournament on Tuesday at home against sixth-seeded Big Pocono (11-7).
Easton (12-6) and the Wanderers (11-7) squared off in a four-five matchup yesterday, while Freemansburg (11-7) will look for the upset bid over second-seeded East Stroudsburg (13-5) in the opening round.
Top-seeded Hellertown (14-4) takes on eighth-seeded Birches (9-8-1) in the final matchup of the first round.
Bath head coach Alex Specht hopes his team can keep their momentum going forward following a double-header sweep over Northampton and Nazareth over the weekend.
"We threw five different pitchers over the weekend and allowed only two runs, so we have momentum heading into the playoffs," said Specht of his team's 14-1 win over Northampton and 2-1 victory over Nazareth. "The players and coaches are confident with what we have going for us right now."
Bath lost to Big Pocono 4-3 during the season in their only encounter, but with Liberty ace Matt Leon scheduled to throw in yesterday's contest, Specht's belief in getting out of the first round was strong.
"We had Jimmy Downey pitch against them the first time, so we feel good with Matt going out there in game one," Specht said. "It should be an interesting round for us and we're just focused on one game at a time."
All first round games started on Tuesday, which were past Press deadlines. Game two of each series take place on Wednesday and, if necessary, game three would take place Thursday evening.
The semifinal round is scheduled for Friday and Saturday of this weekend, with potential game three's for Sunday.
The finals are then slated for Monday and Tuesday of next week. Game three would take place next Wednesday.
With so much action in a crowded calendar, Specht knows not to look ahead.
"All you can really do is look at what's in front of you," he said. "We're not thinking about anything else."
